Response to Federal Immigration Enforcement
Sent on behalf of SMC Senior Staff and the Emergency Operations Team
Dear SMC Students,
Santa Monica College reaffirms a steadfast commitment to its mission in providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all members of the SMC community, regardless of immigration status. We remain committed to standing strong as a beacon of equality and inclusivity for all students, irrespective of immigration status, sexuality, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, age, or socio-economic background.
The change in the federal administration, understandably, creates fear and anxiety for members of the SMC family and it’s important that you know we stand with you and will do everything in our power to safeguard your rights. Your concerns are our concerns; and SMC remains dedicated to providing a safe place for all students as they pursue their educational goals.
Now more than ever, we prioritize the security of our students’ personal and educational information and want to assure you that:
- We will fully protect our student record information in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA);
- We will not turn over student information to immigration enforcement authorities unless required by a subpoena or court order;
-
We will not request or gather information about students’ citizenship or immigration status in the course of providing educational or other services or in connection with public safety activities except as required for financial aid or tuition policies.
More information and safe spaces to discuss those concerns can be found at:
If you want to talk with someone confidentially, the Center for Wellness and Wellbeing provides a range of emotional support services offered in person and virtually. Students can either walk in to make an appointment or visit the Center for Wellness and Wellbeing webpage. Visit the main office or one of the many special programs or satellite campuses to find a therapist to connect with. We also offer a confidential 24/7 emotional support hotline 800-691-6003 exclusive for SMC students.
In the face of these anticipated changes at the federal executive level, it is important for all SMC students, faculty, and staff to know that your safety and wellbeing will continue to be our number one priority. The policies of the new administration will not deter SMC from its mission to provide a safe, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment. We value each member of the SMC community, and we stand together in solidarity and support of our undocumented students.
In solidarity,
Kathryn E. Jeffery, Ph.D., Superintendent/President and Sr. Leadership Team
